Munich to Johannesburg non-stop means 10.5 hours in a fully booked plane and a fellow traveler who despite strong hints refused the two Weissbier as a solid travel bases.
Welcome Adventure!

“You are positively mad!” was the conclusion of one of our fellows as we told him what we had in mind. We started with the idea of an off-road trip to Spain and Romania in 2019, came up with some plans for Morocco and finally agreed that our bikes would not be suitable for a offroad adventure tour. (This is a part of the story other individuals – not riding a motorcycle – cannot transfer). So we had to investigate what would be suitable for trips like that. KTM350: to small tank. R1200GS ADV: to heavy. Wait for the KTM790 Adventure: Expected light – but after presentation at the Eicma: even to heavy.
100% clear: WE NEED NEW LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES WITH MORE THAN 600km RANGE!!!
Explore the journey to our new bikes, the conversion and the upcoming adventure in the southern hemisphere – without the standard adventure bike ;- )
Video of the day – good overview what to carry with you
Aside
…but do we realy need four shirts???
It comes together what belongs together
You might remember the start of the journey and the lost motorcycle keys. There is a update on the performance of the German courier service DHL. We shipped the keys seperated from the bikes on the 12th February 2019 and according DHL they got lost somewhere within the German transport route.
Back in “normal” Life – The return of the toys
Being back for more than two month – we all got into our normal life and business. I can speak only for myself – I often look back on a fantastic experience with a lot of new impressions.
Three weeks / 7.000km / Six countries / Four crazy germans
We started at Johannesburg KTM West Dealership and we returned exactly after three weeks to Husqvarna West in Johannesburg.
Country No.6 – >6.000km
Starting Grooblershop we decided to go to Kimberley and look for new back tires but the city was not good to us and we did not get any tires so we continued to Bloemfontain to visit David at KTM Mountain Goat Equipment. He had four Pirelli Scorpion Rally available.
Restday 3 – Videoediting Session
As the rain was to heavy today we spent the day in Ladybrand and used our mobile devices for playing around with the pictures, videos and impressions we had. Result:
Week 3 – Namibia to South Africa
Week three started in Namibia with a lot of gravel roads. Long distances straight on and amazing views. Fishriver Canyon is only one spot we visited
Tech Review #001 – motorcycle cutting board
As we travel as lightweight as possible, we have to use equipment which has multiple functions. Leatherman is well known but as we are German engineers we found new usage for well known equipment you have while riding.
Namib Desert Experience
Khorixas – Twyfelfontein – Burned Mountain- Uis – Brandberg – Swakopmund
After the riding distances the days before we decided to see some Nambinian monuments so we went to the pertified forrest, the Twyflfontein, looked at the burned mountains and followed some small 4×4 tracks back to the main tracks.
Restday No. 2 / Iron Butt Rides No. 1&2
Started with a good cup of filter coffee and a breakfast including muesli and cereals the Namibian owners told a bit about the lodge and the possibilities. Within two or three seconds we were persuaded to stay another night. The nights cool down to 15 degrees and made the sleep really good. Or it was caused by the two bottles of good south African wine.
The lodge could handle more than 100 visitors. Today we are the only four!
